The New York Rangers are part of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League. The Rangers team was founded in 1926 and one of only six original teams in the hockey league. The name of the team derived from Tex Richard, the man who founded the franchise. They began playing at Madison Square Gardens in the 1926-27 season and play there to this date.
The team won their first Stanley Cup their second year of play and went on to win three more times, the last being the 1993-94 season. The team also won the Prince of Wales Trophy three seasons and the President's Trophy twice along with the Victoria Cup in 2008.
Over the years there have been more than forty-five Ranger players which have been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. The first players to be inducted were Lester Patrick and Howie Morenz in 1945 and the last player was Glenn Anderson in 2008. There have also been a couple of coaches inducted into the hall of fame.
Besides the team trophies which have been won by the Rangers, there are many individual trophies and awards which have been received. The Lady Byng Memorial has been won by a Ranger player fifteen different years and the Lester Patrick Trophy has been won by thirteen players.
As of the present time the head coach of the Rangers is John Tortorella. The team presently has three players from the U.S.S.R., and nine from Canada with five from the United States and four from other countries.
