Designers of clothing, hair, and makeup appear to agree to a great extent on this year's fashion trends, and New York, as the center of the fashion world, is the place to find all of them. Trends for the summer seem to suggest bright, vibrant, solid colors, usually more than one, used to strategically bring out the fine points of the designs in dresses and tops. An across the board trend also is strong shoulders. Padding is being used to bring out shoulders in clothing. Other techniques being used to highlight shoulders are pleats, tucks, and bows. Off the shoulder and one shoulder designs also dominate the runways. Strong shoulders also cross over into the fall and winter designs.
This trend is being combined with skinny pants and leggings of all types. Leggings are very diverse. They come heavy, plain, and patterned, with layered tops of all kinds, including light sweaters and leather jackets. A combination of prints, fur vests, plaids, tweeds, and vertical or horizontal stripes makes for an interesting variety of cover for the colder months.
Another trend is an eighties revival of disco dresses. Nina Ricci has some interesting versions of a delicate nature, while Versace opted for the bright mermaid versions. Various designers presented different versions, most with one shoulder or accentuated shoulders. Fur is being used in small portions, mostly to accentuate other fabrics. Leather is in full swing for 2009. It can be seen in leggings, cropped jackets, dresses, belts, and also in thigh high boots. This year, waist definition is trendy. Belts of all sizes are in fashion, including the unmistakable corset belt.
Makeup trends are gray smokey eyes and dark or light lips, as opposed to the reds and bronzes of previous years. Hair and makeup is back to the eighties, as well, with an infusion of innovative pony tails and buns.
