The Gambino family is one of the top families that control crime in New York City. The Gambino family took over control in 1931 and that control remains in effect today. The Gambino family originated with Vincent Mangano.
Mangano was in charge between the thirties and the fifties. After his murder and several other Mafia bosses, Don Carlos Gambino became head of the now Gambino family. Don Carlos was shrewd with his dealings of being the head of the Gambino family. He was never charged with any crimes and died in 1976 of cancer. John Gotti Sr.'s reign as Boss started in the late 80s. It would have been prior to Don Carlos' death, but Gotti Sr was arrested. Paul Castellano took over after Carlos’ death. Gotti Sr. literally ran the Mob from prison. Gotti Sr. ordered Castellano’s death and took over as reigning Don. Gotti Sr. obtained the nickname “Dapper Don” because of his dress style. After Gotti Sr was imprisoned in 1976, his son John Gotti Jr. became reigning Don. Gotti Jr. was never the favorite to become reigning Don. He captured the reigning title due to the lack of other candidates. Gotti Jr. was the opposite of his father. Gotti Jr.’s reign was short lived. Lasting only three years, he was sent to prison.

He was known as the Dapper Don and managed to run the family from prison. His son Gotti Jr. took over as Don when his father went to prison. Gotti Jr was never a favorite to be Don.
