New York City After 9/11

New York City has been affected in many ways by the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Ropes have tightened. One thing that has changed is that a person is not allowed to be in an area longer than a half an hour to take pictures of the buildings, railroads, the subway or buses.

The economy has also suffered; many of the small businesses around the area of the World Trade Centers are no longer operating and some are still trying to make a comeback. Small businesses usually suffer more than the big businesses because they do not have enough cash to continue to operate, and have a difficult time getting loans to keep them operating until they can recover. About 18,000 businesses suffered because of the attack; most of them were small. Over 12 percent of the downtown area was destroyed in the attack on the World Trade Center.

Since the attacks many of the first responders are suffering from lung problems because of the dusty conditions they were exposed to. The 40,000 policemen, firemen, and rescue workers were not the only ones affected by the dust. There were 31,000 people that worked in the area that have also been affected.

Many New Yorkers have more fear of being harmed by a terrorist attack now than they would have had before 9/11. When the okay was given for a presidential jet to fly over New York City for a photo operation for publicity purposes, the mayor received several phone calls from frightened individuals that wanted to know if this was another terrorist attack.
