New York Stock Exchange

The New York Stock Exchange is located in Manhattan, New York and is the largest stock exchange in the world. The total amount of all domestic companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange is $10.1 trillion. The NYSE was created in 1792 by 24 stock brokers. The name changed in 1817 to the New York Stock and Exchange Board. This is also the same year that they drafted a constitution. The first President of the Exchange was Anthony Stockholm. The Exchange had its first location in 1817, and was located at 40 Wall Street in a single rented room. The room was being rented for $200 a month.

They remained in the rented room at 40 Wall Street until 1835 when the Great Fire of New York destroyed the building. By 1901, the Exchange had grown so much that it needed a new building to support all the activity that it had. They held a design competition with eight different architects to determine the design of the new building. They eventually chose the design created by George B. Post and construction of the new building began on May 10, 1901. In the time since the building was constructed there have been many additions as well as other buildings added to the Exchange.

On April 4, 2007 the NYSE merged with Euronext, a European stock exchange, to form NYSE Euronext. This became the first transatlantic stock exchange. There are currently 2,773 companies listed on the Exchange. It remains an extremely powerful American business.
