Famous Streets in the Famous Big Apple

New York is arguably one of the most famous cities in the world, and in it are some of the most famous locations and streets. Some of these streets have become synonymous with certain things and industries. Throughout the world, Broadway, a street that runs the full length of the Island of Manhattan, has become synonymous with live theater. Even though, in reality, most of the theaters are on streets that cross Broadway in the mid 40s, the word Broadway today means live theater.

Wall Street is another example of an industry that is called by the name of a famous street. Today, Wall Street is a term used to cover the world of stocks, bonds, investment banking, and big business at the highest levels. The world of finance and industry are controlled by "Wall Street," meaning the financial giants whose homes are in the lower Manhattan area around Wall Street. It once served as a divider between the early residents of New Amsterdam.

Other streets, though conjuring up images, are known for their residents or businesses, but not to the extent of Broadway and Wall Street. Fifth Avenue brings to mind high fashion in clothing and jewelry. Park Avenue brings to mind the upper echelons of the rich and super rich. It is where New York's richest live when they are in residence in the city. Second Avenue was once famous for Jewish Theater and restaurants; Canal Street reminds us of the bargains and ethnic shops that were the Lower East Side. The Bowery was known for the drunks and flophouses. To resident New Yorkers, other streets throughout the Five Boroughs are connected to their own connections.
