Don Maynard, born and raised in Crosbyton, Texas, is a former football player who used to play for the NFL team, the New York Jets. He joined the New York Jets when the New York Giants released him from his contract. Before Don Maynard was even drafted for the NFL, he used to play football in college, at Texas Western, now the University of Texas at El Paso. He lasted with the New York Jets for about 12 years (1960-1972), then he played with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1973, and he ended his football career playing with the Houston Texans/Shreveport Steamers in 1974. Don Maynard's career ended with a total of 633 receptions, 11,834 yards, and 88 touchdowns.
One of Don Maynard's special moments was the American League Championship in 1968. He was still playing with the New York Jets, who were playing against the Oakland Raiders at the time of the championship. Don Maynard won the touchdown for the Jets that took the team to the Superbowl, which they then won. During the football off season, he would take advantage of working at regular jobs back in Texas. For instance, he would work as a plumber or work as a teacher at a high school.
After Don Maynard retired from his football career, he worked for an insurance company as a financial planner. In the early 1990s, he started his own financial services consulting firm and kept it up into the 2000s. He stays involved in activities such as golf tournaments and he donates money to charities and scholarship funds. He is now 74 years old and currently resides in El Paso, Texas.
