New York is one of the biggest cities in the United States with sports teams in every single sport imaginable. This city in particular has no shortages of sports legends which have represented it. From the Yankees to the Mets, Giants, Jets, Knicks, Nets, Rangers and Islanders, there are plenty of legends to go around.
Think first of the New York Yankee Legends, there are dozens of them. From DiMaggio to Yogi, Mattingly, and Babe Ruth, the Yankees have more legends than some whole cities do. Lou Gehrig, Pee Wee Reese and others round off an impressive list for this team. The New York Mets had Seaver, Nolan Ryan (but they let him go) and even Willie Mays toward the end of his career. Over on the football side both the Jets and the Giants have had their share with Joe Namath, Phil Simms, Brett Favre (for a fleeting year) and many others.
The basketball teams have had a lot of legends in their own right. The Nicks crested in the 1970s with a team of hall of famers such as Dave DeBusschere, Earl Monroe, Willis Reed, Walt Frazier and Bill Bradley. A bit later, Patrick Ewing came and took over the team. The hockey teams (Rangers and Islanders) have had a few legends as well such as Bun Cook, Bill Cook, Frank Boucher, Mark Messier, Rod Gilbert and Wayne Gretzky.
There are dozens more legends from the New York teams. The above teams are solely in the New York City area and does not include other cities. If you were to expand the list to the entire state there would be hundreds of names included.
