Famous New York Leaders

New York has had its share of famous leaders, stretching back to the earliest days of our nation's inception. Presidents Martin Van Buren, Grover Cleveland and Theodore Roosevelt all served as Governors of New York State in the 19th century. Franklin D. Roosevelt was also a New York Governor for 3 years before becoming President, and his wife Eleanor was a native New Yorker as well. Thomas Dewey led two unsuccessful bids for the presidency while he was Governor.

More recent Governors include Nelson Rockefeller, who held the post for 5 terms, Mario Cuomo for 3 terms, and George Pataki, who also served 3 terms. Governor Eliot Spitzer isn't so much famous as infamous for resigning in disgrace over his involvement with prostitutes after little more than a year in office. Michael Bloomberg is the incumbent Governor.

Some of New York City's most famous mayors include Fiorello La Guardia, Ed Koch and Rudy Giuliani, who was praised for his leadership during and after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. He was named Time magazine's 2001 'Person of the Year'.

Susan B. Anthony was famous for her role in fighting for women's right to vote. Shirley Chisolm, born in Brooklyn, was the first black woman to be elected to Congress. Hillary Clinton is a Senator for New York and wife of former President Bill Clinton.

Although they're not politicians, John D. Rockefeller is a famous business leader, and Cardinal Egan is a spiritual leader.
