Almost every household knows the name of at least one famous mob boss. Not all mob related incidents are played out like the famous movies, but some mob stories that have had widespread media coverage are just as interesting. New York City has always been famous for being the home of organized crime and the mob bosses that run them.
The well-known mob boss John Gotti's nickname in the media was "The Dapper Don" because of his smooth demeanor and flashy clothes. After being taken down by the FBI for several indictments, Gotti was finally sent to federal prison where he passed away from cancer. Gotti has a daughter, Victoria, who made a television show with all of her father’s grandsons and many wonder if the boys will follow in their grandfather's footsteps.
Another popular mob boss that kept the family Gotti tradition of leading the mafia in NYC was Peter Gotti. At 62 years old, Peter recently went to trial on extortion and racketeering charges. There were three Gotti family members who were known to run the mafia outside of the NYC area. These men were John, John Jr. and Peter.
Another famous mafioso, Vito Genovese was the head boss of the baby boomer generation and died in 1959. Vito was a legend and some say if you were on his good side, there was never anything to worry about. Genovese’s successor, better known as Vincent “The Chin” Giganti, lead the mafia right from his jail cell after his take down by the FBI Task Force.
