"You’re Welcome America" has $880,470. "Mamma Mia!" totals earnings at $814,152. In eighth place is "South Pacific" at $813,402. Ninth place belongs to "In the Heights," with $776,269. Finally is the well-known "Phantom of the Opera" with earnings of $720,955.
It is interesting that there are several shows on Broadway that have been running for a long period of time. These include "Phantom of the Opera," which opened in January 1988. Other shows that have been running for several years are "The Lion King," "Chicago," "Mamma Mia!," "Avenue Q," "Wicked" and "Jersey Boys." All of these shows are musicals, which tend to last longer and do better than plays that are not musicals.
Other Broadway shows that have had long runs and have become famous are "Cats," "Les Miserables," "Rent," "Beauty and the Beast," "A Chorus Line," and "Oh! Calcutta." Of these shows, a few are not musicals, while the rest are.
