New York City Greats

Many celebrities have made the great city of New York their home. Whether they have left this world or are still with us, they helped make New York what it is; and have left memories that will keep them with us forever.

Some of the greats are Louis Armstrong, one of the most well known jazz musicians in the world; and Groucho Marx, a well-known comedian both on stage and on television. Andy Warhol is a famous New York artist, who said that everyone would claim fifteen minutes of fame. Cole Porter is one of the best song writers of this century. He wrote and sang a song titled, I Happen to Like New York, in 1930.

There are many other celebrities that have contributed to New York’s greatness. People such as, Lucille Ball, Norman Rockwell, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, and Anna Eleanor Roosevelt. The list would not be complete without mentioning Wolfman Jack, the famous radio DJ, and Jackie Gleason. Andrew Carnegie, gave New York the Carnegie–Mellon Museum, Carnegie Hall, and over 2,500 libraries around the world.

Carrying on the tradition of great late night talk show hosts like, Jack Paar and Johnny Carson is David Letterman. Letterman has one of the longest running talk shows on television; Johnny Carson is the only other person to exceed him. Other great late night talk show hosts are, Tom Snyder who had the Late Late Show in the 1990s; and Late Night show host Conan O’brian. O’brian hosted the show from from 1993 until 2009 when he took over the Tonight Show from Jay Leno.

Some other famous New Yorkers are Woody Allen, Rudolph Giuliani, Robert DeNiro, and Jerry Seinfeld. The latter's show, The Seinfeld Show ran from 1990 until he canceled the show in 1998.
