Famous Leaders from New York

New York is known around the world. It has a rich history that dates back from before the birth of the United States of America. There are many famous leaders who have come from New York. This article will focus on a few famous leaders from New York who have made it to the office of President of the United States. Two of them share the same surname.

First is Theodore Roosevelt. Theodore Roosevelt was first the governor of New York, being elected in 1898. He served until he became Vice President under President William Mckinley. McKinley, however, was assassinated while still in office, so Roosevelt became the 26th President after the assassination. He was reelected in 1904. Theodore Roosevelt was a known conservationist. He is responsible for setting up the National Parks system in the country. He also was responsible for negotiations that settled problems between Japan and Russia and was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize.

Another famous leader from New York is Theodore Roosevelt's cousin, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Franklin Roosevelt was first elected governor of New York. He was governor until he was elected the 32nd President of the United States. He did this after contracting polio. He was the only President to serve more than two full terms as President.

Martin Van Buren, like the previous, was governor of New York before becoming President. He was the 8th President of the United States. He was Andrew Jackson's Vice President first. He was not a popular President, so he did not win reelection.
