There are many famous people who were born in the state of New York. One of them would is professional basketball player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who was born on April 16, 1947. Jabbar played pro basketball for the Milwaukee Bucks from 1969 until 1975 and then for the Los Angeles Lakers until 1989. In 1970, he was on the all-rookie team and was named the Rookie of the Year. He also played for the NBA champions for six years and was the MVP six times. He played for twenty years and was on the NBA All-Star team every year except 1978.
Another famous New Yorker is Lucille Desiree Ball who was born in Jamestown, New York on August 6, 1911. She began a modeling career in 1929 and then moved to Hollywood in 1933. She was the star of "I Love Lucy" which was on for many years and is still seen on some stations. She was married to Desi Arnaz for twenty years. She then married Gary Morton and they were together for twenty-eight years until the time of her death on April 26, 1989. Lucille was considered both an actress and comedian, but was also in the business end of the film industry.
It was not until after her death that she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and also had a commemorative stamp with her picture on it in 2001. The Hall of Fame Magazine named "I Love Lucy" as the greatest TV series ever. Ball also received the Legacy of Laughter in 2007.
