Broadway shows are considered the epitome of commercial theater productions. Favorite Broadway shows have been adapted for movie versions, which makes them available to a vast number of people who could otherwise not enjoy them.
One way to gauge the fame of a Broadway show is by the length of its run. “Phantom of the Opera” is the longest running show in Broadway history, and it plays in several venues. There have also been several movies based on this musical. It opened in January, 1988, and is still playing.
“Cats” is the favorite of many theater lovers. The Broadway run of “Cats” ended in 2000, but it is still running in other venues. So far, there has not been a movie of “Cats.”
Some shows are so popular that after they close on Broadway, they are revived at the insistence of fans. “Les Miserables” is just such a show. Although it closed on Broadway in 2003, it continued to appear in theaters across the US, and due to its unwavering popularity, it was revived on Broadway in 2006 and is still playing. Another revival show is “A Chorus Line,” which closed in 1990 and was brought back in 2006. A film version of “A Chorus Line” was made in 1988. “Rent” and “Chicago” are also in the top long running shows, and they continue today. “Chicago” is another revival, and “Rent” is a huge hit in its first run.
Animated Disney films have made it to Broadway, too. “The Lion King” has been onstage since 1997. Although it no longer runs, “Beauty and the Beast” was a big success. The family demographic for Broadway shows definitely has a voice.
