Famous New York City Actors

Over the eras, there have been many famous actors born and raised in New York. Others went to New York to be featured in the many roles and performances that transpired on Broadway.

Denzel Washington, an actor born in Mt. Vernon, New York became a successful film producer, director, screenwriter, and actor. He became a two time Academy Award winner for his acting. He received the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2001, for his performance in Training Day. Denzel Washington is the second African American to be presented with the Best Actor by the Academy Awards. He has three Golden Globe Awards. Denzel Washington is known for his generosity, and paying it forward due to his tremendous success.

James Cagney was born in Manhattan, New York. He auditioned for a vaudevillian job, and secured a position; despite the fact he did not dance or sing. He moved to Broadway where he starred in Penny Arcade, then on to Hollywood. He often received roles as a gangster or a rugged guy. In 1942, he was chosen for the role as George M. Cohan, in Yankee Doodle Dandy. For his performance he was recognized with an Academy Award. Cagney was a rather versatile actor. He entered retirement, but returned in 1980 to star in Ragtime.

Venue growth continues, with many famous actors from New York starring in roles on Broadway and Hollywood. The Walk of Fame, a prestigious recognition for the stars, includes famous actors from Broadway's stage in New York. These are just two of the actors who call New York City home.
