New York has many storied professional sports franchises. They have several teams from all of the 4 major sports: NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL. In the NFL, New York teams have won a few Super Bowls. The Jets won Super Bowl III, one of the greatest games ever, with QB Joe Namath guaranteeing a win. The Giants won Super Bowl XXI, behind the leadership of Phil Simms and the bruising defense of line backing great Lawrence Taylor, who is still considered one of, if not the best, linebackers in history. The other NFL team in the state of New York is the Buffalo Bills. With the accurate arm of Jim Kelly, who is now in the Hall of Fame, the Bills played in and lost Super Bowls 4 straight years, from 1989 to 1993.
The New York Yankees are the most notorious team in sports in the United States. They have more Hall of Famers than any other team in Major League Baseball. Some of the early greats that laid the foundation for the everlasting stigma that is the Yankees included Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig, and Mickey Mantle. They also have several players from the last couple decades that can be considered descendants of these greats, such as Reggie Jackson, Mariano Rivera, and Derek Jeter. Another Yankee legend is manager Joe Torre, who managed his team to the playoffs every year of his tenure.
The New York Knicks are one of only 2 charter members of the NBA still located in their original city (the other is the Celtics). The Knicks were dominant in three different eras, the 50s, 70s, and 90s. In the 1970s they had a slew of All-stars and future Hall of Famers. Willis Reed, Walt Frazier, Dave DeBusschere, Earl Monroe, and Bill Bradley all helped lead the Knicks to two world championships in 1970 and 1973. Since then they have failed to win a title, but had a rebirth in the 90s with the superb play of Patrick Ewing, another Hall of Famer.
