Famous New York City Musicians

Barry Manilow, from Brooklyn, New York, got interested in music as a child, playing the accordion. His step-father gave him a piano when he was 13. Barry listened and loved jazz and swing albums. After high school, he went to a performing arts school. To pay for that, he worked at CBS, where he wrote many jingles, including some that that are famous today for McDonald's and Band-Aid, as well as others. He also wrote many songs and musicals, as well. With the success of “Mandy,” there was no stopping him.

Pat Benatar was also born in Brooklyn, New York, and she is famous for songs like “Fire and Ice” and “Love is a Battlefield,” among others. Her work with certain charities is also important to her. In 1995, she toured with REO Speedwagon and Fleetwood Mac, her first tour since 1990. Pat has toured with other groups, too. She is about to embark on her first live concert in more than 2 years, and then she is going to make her first album in over 15 years. Benatar has won 4 Grammys, with 6 albums going platinum and 4 gold. Now that she'll be back, there's no telling how many more she'll receive.

Mariah Carey was born on Long Island, and she began singing when she was 3. Her mother taught her to sing after hearing Mariah singing opera with her. Mariah spent a lot of time listening to music while her mother worked. She started her career in 1990 with the help of Tony Mottola of Columbia Records. In the 1990s, Mariah was very popular, then she started to lose her fans. She regained popularity in 2005, and she was the first female to have first five songs go to number one the Billboard Hot 100. She has had much success since then.
