Sports Legends from New York State

When you think of New York, you often think of the legends of the sports world. New York is home of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, which is a shrine to greatness and legends. However, it doesn't end there. New York is bigger than life and its own legends make it so.

In baseball, there is no bigger sports legend than the New York Yankees. Many of the greatest baseball players of our time played for the Yanks. For example, Babe Ruth, with his 714 career home runs and 60 home runs in 1927. You cannot think of Ruth without thinking of Lou Gehrig, winner of the Triple Crown of baseball in 1934. There was also Mickey Mantle, who hit 536 home runs and won three MVP Awards in 1956, 1957 and 1962. Joe Dimaggio wasn't born in New York, but was certainly a legend of the game there with his three MVP Awards and his 56 game hitting streak in 1941. These players made the Yankees a baseball legends

New York has other legendary sports teams as well. Joe Namath became a legend playing for the New York Jets as he lead them to Super Bowl III in January, 1969 against Johnny Unitas and the Baltimore Colts. Namath defeated the Colts and won the MVP.

New York has countless sports legends and legendary moments in baseball, football and even at Belmont Race Track for the Triple Crown. New York has had its marathons and its champions, and even its defeats. It is still the city where legends are born.
