Yogi Berra

Hall of Famer Lawrence Peter (Yogi) Berra was born in St. Louis in 1925. Berra played most of his career with the New York Yankees. He was signed by the Yankees in 1942 for $500.00. After World War II, where he served in the Navy, and after playing a couple of years in the minors, Berra was called up to the Yankees in 1947.

During his nineteen years with the Yankees, Yogi’s team appeared in 14 World Series, winning 10 Championships. Both are records. Berra was a 15 time All Star and won the American League's MVP 3 times. Yogi also received MVP votes in 15 consecutive years and never finished lower than fourth in the voting.

One of the highlights of Yogi’s career came when he caught Don Larson’s perfect game against the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1956 World Series. It is still, to this day, the only no-hitter in the post season.

After Berra’s career was over in 1963, he was hired as manager of the New York Yankees. The Yankees started slow in 1964 but after a strong finish, they returned to the World Series to play the St. Louis Cardinals. The team lost to the Cardinals in seven games and Yogi was fired.

In 1972, Yogi was named manager of the New York Mets. The following season, the Mets were in last place and the press had asked Yogi if he thought the season was over. Yogi replied, with his now famous quote “It ain’t over till it’s over."
