When thinking of sports legends of New York, the first name that will come to mind tends to be Babe Ruth, the baseball legend. Even though Babe Ruth was not a native New Yorker, he did change the New York Yankees forever. When the Boston Red Sox sold Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees, many believed that he put a curse on the Red Sox, called the curse of "The Bambino," which was finally broken with their win in 2004. Many also believe that the rivalry between these two teams was born out of that transaction.
Another legend is Willis Reid. He was recently honored by the mega-giant cereal "Wheaties" with a picture on their cereal box. Willis Reid, NBA player, played for the New York Knicks and he helped them win the 1973 championship; he was also named "Most Valuable Player." During his career with the New York Knicks, he was part of the All-Star team seven times. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1982 and was considered one of the top 50 best players of the NBA of all time.
On a more recent note, Eli Manning has been called a legend of New York because he lead the New York Giants to their "Super Bowl XLII" win on February 3, 2008 over the New England Patriots. He was voted the "Most Valuable Player" in that game. He was drafted by the San Diego Chargers but he did not want to play for them, so he was then sent to the New York Giants and never looked back.
