The professional baseball team, the New York Yankees, seems to have more than its share of legends associated with their team. The great Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in the 1920s and Joe DiMaggio in the 30s, 40s and into the 50s. We are going to look at the careers of these three amazing ball players.
First legends first, Babe Ruth. The “Babe” as he was called, started his major league career with the Boston Red Sox where he played from 1914 until 1919. In 1920, he moved to the New York Yankees and played there until 1934. He had a batting average of .342 and hit 714 home runs during his career. Ruth changed the country’s perspective of baseball and he brought a huge fan following with him to every game he played.
Lou Gehrig had a wonderful season in 1927, joining Babe Ruth to hit 107 home runs between them. This record did not fall until Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle hit 115 in 1061. Gehrig and Ruth led the Yankees to a record setting season of 110 wins. Gehrig hit a whopping .373 that season.
Joe DiMaggio came onto the Yankees team in 1936, and he played his last game in 1951; a stellar career by every stretch of the imagination. He had a batting average of .325, batted in 1,527 runs and hit 361 home runs. DiMaggio was selected to the All-Star team every season he played, according to Wikipedia. He also still holds the title for the longest hitting streak of 56 games.
All three of these extraordinary players truly earned their right to be called New York Yankee legends.
