Broadway opened it's doors for musicals in 1866 with "The Black Crook." Then in 1891, more shows came to Broadway with a wide selection of shows to choose from. When asking what Broadway's most famous shows are, you might have a hard time figuring this out. So, which ones have topped the charts?
The top five shows ever shown on Broadway are "The Phantom of the Opera" which opened in 1988, "Peter Pan," "Les Miserables" in 2003, "Cats" from 2000, and "A Chorus Line", which appeared from the 1980s to 1990 and then was brought back in 2006, and to this day, it is still among the most famous. Shows that have been made famous by appearing on Broadway are "Chicago," "Hair," "Show Boat," "Oklahoma" and "Westside Story." Other shows made famous are "The Fiddler on the Roof," "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers," "Rent" and "9 to 5."
A lot of well known celebrities have appeared on Broadway such as Claire Danes and 1996 Gold Metal Olympian Dominique Daws. Just this year alone such actors/actresses have appeared in shows such as, but not limited to, Christain Slater, Kathleen Turner, James Earl Jones, Whoppi Goldberg, Alan Alda, Christina Applegate, Tim Curry and Billy Crystal.
Broadway shows have been around for a very long time and with every passing year, people's taste change as to what they prefer to see on Broadway. As in the past, Broadway has no trouble keeping up with the changing times.
