Sports Legends from New York

There have been many great athletes from New York to play professional sports. One of the greatest was major league pitcher Sandy Koufax. Koufax had a great career, however his career was cut short due to arthritis at the age of thirty. He pitched his entire career for the Dodgers. He was with the team when they moved from Brooklyn to Los Angeles. Koufax had outstanding career numbers for the short time he played. He was in the major leagues for twelve seasons.

He won the Cy Young Award three times during his career. He won in 1963, 1965, and 1966. During those seasons he led the entire league in wins, strikeouts, and earned run average. His three Cy Young awards were even more impressive because at the time the award was only given to one pitcher for both the National and American Leagues. Today one pitcher from each league wins the award. Koufax was also named National League MVP in 1963. He also won three World Series Titles in 1959, 1963, and 1965.

Koufax became the first pitcher in history to throw four no-hitters in a career. He also pitched a perfect game in 1965. He became the sixth pitcher to throw a perfect game. Koufax finished his career with 165 wins and 2,396 strikeouts. Had his career not been cut short, he would have had much higher career numbers. In 1976, Koufax became the youngest person to ever be elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
