Famous Musicians from New York City

There are many people who claim that they are from New York City, but far less have actually been born there. Many musicians have been born in raised in the Big Apple and have moved on to become famous.

Aaliyah was born in New York in January of 1979 with the name Aaliyah Dana Haughton. She was a singer for R&B and pop music, as well as an actress. She died in a plane crash in 2001, with several others after filming her music video Rock the Boat.

Christina Marie Aguilera was born in December in 1980 in New York. She became a singer and songwriter for pop and R&B music. Her first performance on television was on Star Search, and then she became a member of the Mickey Mouse Club in 1993. Today she is releasing her fourth album during the summer of 2009.

On January 10, 1953, Patricia Mae Andrzejewski was born. She was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005, as Pat Benatar. Some of her hits are still played by people of all ages.

Another New York hitmaker of the 1980s is Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper, or as we know her, Cyndi Lauper. She was born in 1953. She still tours the world to this day in her support for human rights. Her hit "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" is still one of the most celebrated songs of teenage girls today.

New Yorker William Martin Joel, or Billy Joel, was born in 1949. He has a long list of talents in the music world, including singer/songwriter, classical composer and rock musician. He has won five Grammys and nominated for 18 others.
