There are always famous plays being preformed on the famous Broadway of New York City. Some of the shows that are currently being performed are as follows.
Opening in October of 2003, the musical "Wicked" has been a popular choice for theatergoers ever since. It is a musical story of the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda the Good Witch, before Dorothy arrived on the scene in The Wizard of Oz.
“South Pacific” is a wonderful Tony winning remake of a classic, Pulitzer Prize winning book. The play takes place during World War II on a tropical island, where a U.S. Navy nurse has fallen in love with an estate owner. "South Pacific" opened in April of 2008 and is a hit with audiences.
Another popular Broadway show is “Jersey Boys,” which opened in November of 2005. "Jersey Boys" presents the story of how Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons went from unknown kids to superstar musicians. It includes several great musical numbers taken from the band's heyday.
A favorite Broadway musical for people of all ages is “The Lion King," which opened in November of 1997. This show includes innovative puppetry which brings the animals of the African Pridelands to life in amazing fashion.
A recent revival on Broadway is "Hair," which tells of the hippie movement of 1960's New York City during the Vietnam War. Broadway’s longest running show, which opened in January of 1988, is "The Phantom of the Opera." This is a musical set at the Paris Opera House which tells the story of a disfigured musical genius who falls in love with a beautiful soprano. Another great revival is “West Side Story," and this version opened in March of 2009. It tells the story of a modern day Romeo and Juliet whose love is divided by rival gangs in New York City during 1950.
