New York City's Broadway got its kickoff in 1882. Since then, Broadway shows have gained recognition around the world. The longest running Broadway production is Phantom of the Opera. Broadway encompasses more than just Broadway Street. It includes many surrounding streets and adjacent areas to Broadway Street as well Time Square. There are Broadway theaters all in this area with varying sizes and popularity.
Broadway shows tend to run for several weeks. Shows give the best of drama, comedy, and musicals. Some have been known to run for several months. Musicals tend to run much longer. Seeing Broadway shows is one of the most popular attractions for visiting tourists. People come from all over the world. The show involves the cast, the story line, and the live music. Many famous artists have starred in Broadway Shows including Barbara Streisand who played in Funny Girl, Rubben Studdard who played in Ain't Misbehavin, Hugh Jackman, Heather Headley, Nathan Lane, John Lithgow, and James Earl Jones. These are only a small number of the many famous actors and actresses to appear onstage.
Many famous composers have also come out of these Broadway Shows, such as George Cohan, Oscar Hammerstein, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, and the Gershwin Brothers. They have written Shows like Oklahoma, Annie Get Your Gun, Anything Goes, The King and I, and South Pacific. These are a few popular musicals.
