John Joseph Gotti, Jr. was born in New York City, New York in the Bronx on October 27, 1940. He was one of 13 children in his family. By the time he was 12, he was involved in gang activity, which included stealing cars and robbery. During his gang activity he injured his foot while trying to steal a truck. Because of this he limped the rest of his life.
Due to his involvement in the gang he began working with the Gambinos and continued with his criminal activity. Before he was forty he was arrested for hijacking an airliner and was convicted of this crime. He spent less than 3 years of a 4-year sentence in a federal prison.
After his release he continued his criminal activity even though this was a violation of his parole. At this time he was working for the Castellano family and doing things they did not approve of. He then killed Paul Castellano and his bodyguard. Then he took over the mafia family. Gotti had power and among other things he controlled gambling networks and the labor unions for trucking. Since most of his activities were illegal he did not report his income to the IRS.
John Gotti was arrested many times and served time more than once but in December 1990 the FBI and agents from New York City arrested Gotti along with other member of the mafia. Among other things he was charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder and tax evasion. After his conviction in 1992 he was sentenced to life in prison where he remained until his death in June, 2002.
