Famous Leaders from New York City

There have been many leaders throughout history that came from New York City. Theodore Roosevelt, for example, was born in New York City in 1858. He was not only a war hero in the Spanish American war of 1898, but was also one of the leaders in the Republican Party after the war. In 1901, after the death of William McKinley, he became the 26th president of the United States and held the office until 1909. He was also the Governor of New York from 1899 to 1900.

Eleanor Roosevelt was born in New York City in 1884. She was married to Franklin Roosevelt, who was the President of the United States from 1933 to 1945. She was an advocate for civil rights and supported her husband's New Deal reforms. She was also a United Nations delegate in 1945. She stayed in politics for most of her life.

Fiorello La Guardia was both a native of New York City and the Mayor of it. His term lasted from 1934 to 1945. In that time, he helped the city recover from the Great Depression of the 1930s. He also served in the US House of Representatives before becoming Mayor and supported the New Deal.

Some other famous leaders from New York City include Colin Powell, Al Smith, Rudy Giuliani, Louis Farrakhan and Mario Cuomo. Some other leaders that made New York City their home later in life include David Dinkins, Millard Fillmore, Franklin Roosevelt and Martin Van Buren.
