New York Giants Legends

The New York Giants were founded in 1925 by Tim Mara. During their eight decades of football history, the New York Giants have had many famous owners, coaches, and players.

In 1934 the Giants were headed by coach Steve Owens and they drew crowds from all over. Then in 1938 they ruled the roost as one of the top teams of the era. In 1948 they signed DB Emlen Tunnell, who became the first African American in the NFL Hall of Fame.

The Giants fired Steve Owens after the poor seasons in the 1950s and hired Jim Lee Howell, who made Vince Lombardi and Tom Landry his offensive and defensive coordinators. The three of them helped bring the Giants back, while adding stars such as Frank Gifford, Sam Huff, Charlie Conerly, and Rosey Brown. They won the 1958 NFL Championship Game.

One of the greatest comeback stories happened in 1979. The Giants hired head coach Ray Perkins and defensive coordinator Bill Parcells. The general manager George Young selected Phil Simms in the first round of the draft and within the next few years football changed forever.

In 1981 they acquired Lawrence Taylor and Rob Carpenter and were victorious. In 1982 Ray Perkins returned to Alabama and Bill Parcells replaced him.

In 1986 The New York Giants won their first Super Bowl Championship. Phil Simms was named Super Bowl Most Valuable Player, Lawrence Taylor was named league's Most Valuable Player and Bill Parcell was Coach of the Year.
