New York sports legends are well known the world over. Who has never heard of Yogi Berra? He is known as one of the greatest catchers in baseball history and is ranked the 52nd greatest non-pitcher in major league. Yogi had been named "the little squat man" because of his being a small man and of course his position as a catcher.
Jimmy Austin was with Dayton until 1907 when he was sold to Omaha in the Western League. He stole 97 bases for Omaha in 1908 and would you believe he was traded at the end of the season and sold to the New York Highlanders of the American League? He made his major League debut in 1909 at the age of 28. He played only two seasons in New York and was then traded to the St. Louis Browns in 1911.
Rugger Ardizoia pitched just one game for the Yankees in 1947, and retired from baseball in 1952. His was probably the shortest career in the game of baseball. Ivy Andrews played for the New York Yankees from 1931 to 32, and again from 1937 to 38. He was a right handed pitcher who had trouble with his arm. Because of this they named him Poison Ivy. There are quite a few good teams out there that have some all time greats but New York has been blessed with a lot of great players from the early 1900s. They still have some of the greatest players on the baseball field.
